Mauricio Pochettino in a bitter mood

It left Mauricio Pochettino in a bitter mood that there was not a single person outside the fan-base of Tottenham wanting them to take the Premiership trophy and everybody was just for Leicester to complete a fairy-tale.

Pochettino believes the top side is always the one people look to defeat, but, for a change, it’s the no. 2 side which was on the target the previous season. Nobody was after the leaders and that was bizarre.

Tottenham chased Leicester to a very long distance and it’s only in the game before their penultimate game, when they had a draw, the title technically became impossible to clinch for them.

They were probably not tight enough at crucial times, but, according to Pochettino, he and his boys had loads to learn from it and they would be back only in a stronger capacity in this year’s summer.

Tottenham happy with Position in League

There might be no scope for the Premiership title, but, what is still keeping the Spurs supporters motivated is the possibility of them leaving behind the bitter rivals Arsenal in the standings after two decades.

It has never happened after the 1994-95 season that Tottenham has secured a higher position in the League than Arsenal. But, a win or draw on the Newcastle visit on the last game day will do it for them.

Arsenal can, at maximum, stretch their points to 71 which, in case of a draw at St. James Park, would equalize their tally to that of Tottenham.

That scenario would work in the favour of Tottenham as in their case the total no. of goals scored exceeds the total no. of goals conceded by 10, while, for Arsenal, it is only plus 1.

And, barring an inhumane effort, the Gunners should not cover that margin in one game.

In another scenario where Tottenham wins, they would have 73 points and then, they would be ahead of Arsenal on points’ basis itself, leaving no room for the interference of the goal differential. Continue reading

Mauricio Pochettino has attracted the attention of other clubs

Mauricio Pochettino has led Tottenham Hotspur to what has been a memorable season for the English club as they have only lost 4 league matches from their 34 opening games of the campaign and won 19 matches, the only other club in the Premier League that has won more games is Leicester City.

INJURY CRISIS ROCKS TOTTENHAM AHEAD OF LIVERPOOL ENCOUNTER

Tottenham Hotspurs, currently second in the English Premier League (EPL) are set to have a face-off with the Never Walk Alone crooners, Liverpool. However, the spurs have an injury crisis on their hands. With 61 points from 31 games, the Mauricio Pochettino-led team has done an impressive job and is set to finish in the top four this season.

The match against Liverpool at Anfield is a tricky one that could define their EPL title hopes. Leicester city with 66 points from same 31 games lead Tottenham with just five points and 7 games left. The next three games would be crucial in helping either team retain the resolve till the end. Hence, the current injury crisis is a big deal for the Yids.

According to reports from FootBall Insiders, prolific spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld has been ruled out to the sidelines after he pulled out of a Belgium game in the international break against Portugal. He joins the gradually growing list of injured players Spurs are contending with at the moment.

Jan Vertonghen and Cameron Carter-Vickers are also out injured. Vertoghen picked up his knee ligament injury around late January while in action against crystal palace. The 28 year old player was hoping to return on the Liverpool match. He has been replaced so far by prolific talent Kevin Wimmer. Wimmer combined well with the recently injured Alderweireld to maintain a solid defense for Spurs.

Tottenham still awaits Alderweireld’s return as the set-back would leave the team without any of their first team centre-backs. This might not augur well when facing a compact strike force as present in Liverpool, especially with the season gradually coming to an end and teams trying to get any points possible. Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino claims that the club’s former star Gareth Bale could return

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino claims that the club’s former star Gareth Bale could return to White Hart Lane if favourable conditions persist.

Bale became the world’s most expensive player after his £ 85 million move from Tottenham to Real Madrid. He has since been able to lift several trophies including the Champions League, but there has always been in doubt surrounding him. This is down to the domination of Cristiano Ronaldo over every other player in the squad. The Portuguese superstar was expected to be sold, but he has become far more important as the years have progressed.

Bale continues to be ranked as one of the key players, but his importance has certainly diminished in the last few months. Rafa Benitez was a manager who saw Bale as a key ingredient in the team, but he has just been sacked. Zinedine Zidane has been appointed in his place. The Real Madrid legend is expected to tilt in favour of Ronaldo rather than Bale. This has once again started rumours about a potential return to the Premier League for the Welsh superstar. If Bale is set for a return to UK, then Spurs will be one of the teams interested in signing him according to their manager Pochettino. Continue reading

Thierry Henry believes that Arsenal lost a great opportunity

Thierry Henry believes that Arsenal lost a great opportunity to replace Manchester City as the Premier League leaders after the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at the Emirates stadium.

Since this was a home match for the gunners, they were fully expected to get a victory. Arsenal have always had the upper hand over Spurs when it comes to games at the Emirates stadium. There have been only a couple of occasions when Tottenham have returned to North London with something to show for their efforts.

Even though Mauricio Pochettino’s well drilled team are challenging for a top four place, this was seen as a good opportunity for three points. However, Arsenal were lucky to come out with at least a draw. Tottenham took the lead early in the match through Harry Kane and almost managed to maintain this advantage till the final whistle. Arsenal could have lost the game had it not been for the late equaliser from Kieran Gibbs. Henry believes that the game was lost in the first half when Arsenal allowed Tottenham to dictate the game too much. The former Arsenal striker believes that the home team should have taken the game to the opposition rather than the other way round. Continue reading

Mauricio Pochettino believes that his side have improved a lot defensively

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes that his side have improved a lot defensively and this should start an improvement in terms of fortunes going forward.

Spurs made a poor start to the season after going winless in the first few matches of the campaign. However, they have now secured back-to-back victories after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. This was also the first home win of the season for Pochettino’s team. Summer signing Heung-Min Son, who was brought in from Bundesliga for over £ 20 million, scored the only goal of the game to open his account for Spurs.

Many expected a reaction from Crystal Palace, who came into the game after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the previous game. It was expected to be a tough match and it turned out to be the case for the home team. There was not much to separate the two teams in terms of attempts on goal or possession. However, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had to make some crucial saves in order to keep his team in the game. After the match, Pochettino praised the French international by saying that he is now the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Continue reading

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Spurs could be changing a lot of aspects

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Spurs could be changing a lot of aspects about their squad next season in order to start challenging for the top four place.

Their Champions League aspirations wilted this season after a 1-0 defeat against relegation threatened Aston Villa. Tottenham looked short of ideas as they failed to beat Tim Sherwood’s team who are playing with only 10 men for most of the match. Christian Benteke scored the only goal of the game to put an end to Tottenham’s aspirations of a top four finish. The club’s current position is likely to see them return to the Europa League next season.

After making substantial changes last summer, Pochettino has not ruled out doing the same in the upcoming transfer window. He says that the difficulty of playing in the Europa League cannot be stressed, as Spurs have to deal with Thursday and Sunday matches for much of the campaign. He has not ruled out the possibility of going for an even bigger squad in order to cope with the demands of the Europa League, but there are indications that he could go for a different squad as well. This has raised concerns about the futures of players like Mousa Dembele and Emmanuel Adebayor. Continue reading
